The problem

I'm a reader and I'm among those who haven't abandoned physical books. I have difficulty categorizing them and remembering to whom I lent them, with whom I was, and when they were supposed to be returned. Additionally, I used to rely on physical stores for book recommendations, but most of them didn't match my preferences.

The solution

An app that assists in organizing and categorizing books in an easy and intuitive way, while also allowing you to track loans and returns. A new management system for physical books without complications at your fingertips, gathering and providing valuable insights for new readings."

Design process

The SORT project was carried out in a welcoming manner because from its inception, I put users at the center of my concerns. Several elements make it user-focused - I conducted in-depth research, the design is intuitive, and there were usability tests. This made the application not only functional but also highly tailored to individual user needs. I used design thinking to develop this project.

Empatizar: Matriz CSD, UX Reserach.

Definir: Persona.

Idealizar: User journey maps, Problem Statement, Value Proposition, Site Map, Paper Wireframes, Digital Wireframes, Components Guide.

Prototipar: Accessibility, High-fidelity prototype.

Testar: Usability study.

To make the user feel at home

User-Centered Research: I initiated the project by conducting detailed research to understand users' needs, habits, and challenges related to organizing personal books. This included interviews, market research, and competitive analysis.

User-Centered Design: Based on research insights, I designed the user interface with the goal of making it intuitive and user-friendly. I emphasized ease of adding, categorizing, and tracking books, making the experience more welcoming and personal.

Personalization and Categorization: I implemented customization features that allow users to organize their books according to their personal preferences, creating a highly individual-centered experience.

Success Factors

Engagement

Rate of Interaction with Key Features: Measure how frequently users interact with the app's key features, such as adding new books, registering loans, and the completion rate of finished loans.

Resolution

Problem Resolution Time: Record the time users take to resolve complex tasks, such as adding multiple books at once or managing large libraries. This can help evaluate the design's efficiency and how well users can continue using the app.

Value Delivery

Time to First Value Action: Record the time it takes for users from registration to performing the first value action, such as adding a book to their library. This helps assess how quickly users perceive the app's value.

Task Success and Error

Task Completion Rate: Measure how many users can successfully complete key tasks, such as adding a book, categorizing it, or marking it as read. This reflects the effectiveness of the interface in facilitating task completion.

Error Rate and Return to Critical Steps: Track the error rate or the number of times users return to critical steps in the process, such as filling in book information or loans. This can indicate areas of friction in the design that need improvement.

High-fidelity prototype

When implementing a login screen, this allows us to create customized user profiles, enabling personalized interactions and tailored content based on individual preferences. This not only enhances the user interface but also fosters a sense of belonging and ownership within the platform, improving user engagement and satisfaction.

The screen with the user's segmented library is a vital component of this project's user interface. It serves as a central hub where users can efficiently organize and categorize their books based on various criteria such as genre, author, or publication year.

The inclusion of a feature that allows users to share the books they are currently reading with their friends serves to enhance the overall user experience of the application. By enabling users to showcase their reading choices, it promotes engagement and fosters a sense of community within the app. This social interaction feature not only encourages users to connect with their friends but also provides an opportunity for book recommendations and discussions, creating a more immersive and dynamic user interface.

Usability test

After creating the high-fidelity prototype, I developed a script to conduct user tests. I selected three users who agreed to participate in the questionnaire.

Navigation - Some users encountered difficulties in finding the desired features and accessing the help section.

Help resources - Users expressed confusion regarding the use of the FAQ.

Presentation of information - Users questioned the functionality and relevance of the chart displayed in the "Loan" section.

Positive Feedback - Users appreciated the visually appealing and minimalist design of the screens, which allowed them to efficiently perform tasks with limited resources.

Challenges

Finding people who had physical books and could participate in the interviews was how I began to overcome this difficulty through a book club.

Dealing with the creation of an information architecture that allowed for the simple and intuitive categorization of books.

Developing an efficient lending flow that allowed users to borrow and track books without overloading the interface required a detailed and careful approach to interaction points.

Creating a design that was both appealing and accessible to diverse audiences, considering colors, typography, and layout, demanded a delicate balance between aesthetics and usability.

Maintaining visual and interaction consistency across all screens, considering various states and flows, proved to be a challenge in creating the style guide due to the complexity of the application and the need to ensure a cohesive experience.

Lessons learned

Deeply understanding the needs and contexts of people who engage with physical books, exploring their perspectives, was a valuable lesson that enhanced my design process and my relationship with the target audience.

Prioritizing usability showed me that, often, less is more. Simplifying flows and interfaces resulted in more intuitive and satisfying experiences for users.
