Overview

This study aims to deepen the understanding of the handoff process between design and front-end development teams. The handoff refers to the moment when the design team passes its work to the development team to implement the design. The goal is to ensure the work is delivered clearly and efficiently, avoiding delays, communication issues, and rework.

Our role

I initiated this research in collaboration with two researchers, Potyra Dornelas and Leticia Viegas, to make processes more effective and obtain a deeper analysis. Throughout the research, we aimed to understand the experiences, challenges, and improvement points through interviews with development team members and UX designers. After data collection, we conducted a detailed analysis of the results and presented our findings to the UX Chapter.

Research question

How can we improve the handoff process between design and front-end development teams to ensure greater efficiency, clarity, and satisfaction among the team members involved?

Research Objective

To understand the experiences, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in the handoff process between design and front-end development teams.

To understand the experiences, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in the handoff process between design and front-end development teams.

Specific objectives

  • Identify the main difficulties faced by developers when receiving the handoff from designers.

  • Evaluate the clarity and quality of communication between designers and developers during the handoff.

  • Analyze the effectiveness of the tools and platforms currently used in the handoff process.

  • Understand the specific expectations and needs of developers regarding the specifications and documentation received.

  • Provide insights on how to more efficiently integrate developer feedback into the design process.

Data Analysis

For didactic purposes, we categorized the responses into 10 blocks. In each of these categories, we identified improvement points, including communication, negotiation, Figma organization, Mendix technical limitations, standardization, front review, dev mode, presentation, and handoff.

Metodology

We conducted qualitative research over one month, from March 1 to 30, 2024, using semi-structured interviews with pre-prepared questions for POs and designers: 14 designers and 6 POs were invited to participate. The interviews were conducted individually, recorded (with consent), and later analyzed. The qualitative approach allowed for a deep understanding of the participants' experiences and perceptions, enabling the identification of valuable and specific insights.

Presentation of Results

The research results were presented to the UX Chapter, highlighting the main findings and proposing solutions to improve the handoff process. The recommendations focused on improving communication, increasing clarity in specifications and documentation, and more efficiently integrating developer feedback into the design process.

Challenges

  • Inadequate Methodology: During the research process, we realized that the initially chosen method was not sufficient to extract crucial information. This limitation was highlighted at the end of the study as a limiting factor.

  • Limited Scope: The initial scope of the research was quite limited. To fully understand the context, we had to expand the research, starting with open interviews with more experienced professionals to better understand the context of front-end developers.

  • Lack of Research Infrastructure: The absence of a dedicated research team was a major challenge. We did not have automated systems for interview transcription, forcing us to carry out the process manually. Despite this, we strove to maintain a high level of professionalism in the documentation and development of methods and processes.

  • Recognition of Research Value: The company was still in the process of recognizing the value of UX research. This required us to be extremely careful in conducting the investigation, ensuring that we used efficient methods and extracted meaningful analyses that demonstrated the impact of our findings.

Learnings

  • Understanding Front-end Needs: The research revealed how front-end developers receive our work and their main difficulties when starting their activities. From technical limitations to spacing issues, communication, and negotiation, various topics were addressed during the research.

  • Flexibility in Interview Script Development: I learned to be flexible in developing the interview script, adopting a semi-structured format that allowed for extracting information when necessary and redirecting the conversation as needed.

  • Importance of Front Review: I understood the importance of front review as a necessary review mechanism with well-defined processes to avoid errors. This insight helped structure the project's review and validation steps better.

  • Time Management and Analytical Rigor: I worked closely with researchers Potyra Dornelas and Letícia Viegas, from whom I learned to manage time better and apply research techniques with analytical rigor. I learned to be more meticulous in analyzing responses and to have a keen eye in creating research scripts, ensuring precise and relevant data collection.
